What Is Your Hair Telling You?

Is your hair trying to tell you something? Hair needs a perfect balance of nutrients to be healthy and behave. Your hair can give you clues as to which nutrients you should focus on.

We can add nutrients to our hair by eating healthy, drinking lots of water and taking vitamins. But sometimes our hair seems to be lacking something. Another way to add nutrients is through hair products like shampoos, conditioners, and treatments.

Here are some tell tale symptoms and quick fixes:

My hair dries really fast and I fight static.
Your hair is dry! A moisturizing shampoo and condition would help. Also, use a weekly deep moisturizing treatment until you notice improvement.

Product Picks:
- Usual: SuperRich Shampoo + Daily Intensive Moisture Treatment
- Weekly: DeepQuench Moisture Masque
- Styling: Extreme Shine Treatment Oil or WickedGood Shine Spray

My hair takes forever to dry and it's dull.
Your hair needs protein! When your hair lacks protein, it can take longer than usual to dry. It's best to use a restorative shampoo and conditioner and a leave-in treatment when styling.

Product Picks:
- Usual: Alternate ClearItUp Detox Shampoo + Baobab Shampoo Follow With Baobab Condition
- Weekly: CrazySmooth Treatment Masque
- Styling: Plush Locks Leave-In Smooth or Baobab Leave-In Treatment

My hair is flat and life-less.
Your hair needs a boost! A weekly clarifying treatment along with using a volumizing system will be your best bet. Hair can flatten from product build up, mineral build up from your water, or environmental build up from things like cigarette smoke and exhaust.

Product Picks:
- Usual: SuperPlump Shampoo + Condition
- Weekly: ClearItUp Detox Shampoo
- Styling: LiftIt Foam Mousse

Frizz.
This is the most complained about hair woe. Frizzy hair needs oil to weigh it down, but you also don't want oily hair. The trick it to find the perfect balance of oil weight. A product with anti-humidity ingredients is where it's at. It's best to not suds up every day. Your natural oils are the best for fighting frizz.

Product Picks:
- Usual: CrazySmooth Shampoo + Conditioner
- Weekly: CrazySmooth Treatment Masque
- Styling: RadicallySmooth + HumidityRx

Oily scalp.
Ah yes, over-achieving oil glands. Your cure is a balancing or light clarifying shampoo followed my a light conditioner.

Product Picks:
- Usual: ClearItUp Detox Shampoo + SuperPlump Condition or PureRelease Detangle Spray
- Styling: DrySpell Dry Shampoo (Even after you freshly shampooed! The dry shampoo will soak up any oils throughout the day. Also use it before you go to bed to prevent the dreaded grease spot on your pillow.)

How To: Make Fashion Colors LAST

So, you decided to take the plunge. You don't want to be just blonde or brunette and basic red isn't your style. No. Not you. You're more of the rainbow, mermaid, unicorn type. You opted for a fashion color.

You sit for hours at the salon, lifting out old hair color or lightening your natural. Your tresses get blow dried, then the mystical bold colors come out.. now you're getting excited.

Finally, you have the end result! A fun, bright, no-one-has-time-for-boring-hair, hair color! But, fashion colors are typically direct dyes. That means, the color molecule doesn't mix with your natural hair color like permanent dyes do. It rests on the cuticle layer. This is why your stylist has to 'pre-lighten' your strands. Pre-lightening opens up the cuticle so the direct dye can stick to the hair. After your color process, it important to keep the cuticle shut down so the direct dye molecules can't escape.

If you go home and treat your hair like it was natural, you may end up stripping your hair of all that hard work and money! Here are a few tips to keep your color fresh!
1) When you wash, only use COLD water. Hot water opens up the cuticle and your color will go right down the drain.
2) Shampoo with sulfate-free, salt-free shampoos. I highly suggest ColorProof's Baobab Shampoo and Condition . This system is so gentle, and strengthens your hair. (Remember, your stylist pre-lightened your hair. You need to replace proteins and moisture that is lost!)

3) Only shampoo when you NEED to. Even with the best shampoo, each time you lather up, a little bit of your color comes out. (Watch out for your light colored towels and pillow cases.. they make become as colorful as your hair.) But, don't think you have to walk around with dirty, stinky, colorful hair. Dry shampoo will become your best friend. I like ColorProof's Dry Spell ColorProtect Dry Shampoo. You'll fall in love with it because it doesn't leave a powdery residue. It also protects your color from fading!

4) Every time you use a hot tool (blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron... etc.) use a heat protector! Heat opens up the cuticle. I have seen color literally disappear after one pass of the flat iron.

5) Find fun ways to show off your color. Dirty hair make great up style hair! Use that to your advantage.

6) It's important to blow dry your hair after you get it wet. If you hair is left to dry from its wet state, the water fills up with pigments and can stain your skin, clothes, and anything else it touches. Good news, by using a heat protector while blow drying, you will be sealing in your color!

Long live your color and many great hair days to you!

The Power of Olaplex - How Can It Help Your Hair?

Did you know there is a way to prevent damage to your hair? Let me tell you about Olaplex... the biggest advancement in hair chemistry since permanent hair color!

Top- Lightened with Olaplex
Bottom- Lightened without Olaplex

Hair is made up of disulfide bonds. Everyday, these bonds get damaged and broken by various activities. Breaking these bonds is unavoidable. Shampooing, coloring, styling, brushing, even just getting your hair wet damage bonds. Now, there is a way to rebuild these bonds and make your hair stronger! That would be a great hair day!

Olaplex is a in-salon treatment. No. 1 is mixed with lightener, color, or gloss. This multiplies bonds and repairs damaged bonds. No. 2 is applied after the color is processed and perfects the bonds.

No. 3 is a take home treatment to be used once a week or more depending on damage level. It's important to know that this is NOT a deep conditioner. Olaplex repairs damage inside your hair strand, conditioner repairs mostly surface damage. The No. 3 treatment should be left on for at least 10 minutes, shampooed out, then conditioned with your favorite conditioner. Personally, I'll apply the No. 3 to my hair and watch an episode or two of Seinfeld, then follow with my favorite ColorProof shampoo and conditioner.

Bad Weather Hair Tips

Today is a dreary, rainy day in Charleston, SC. The streets may be flooding, but that doesn't mean it has to be a bad hair day.

When the weather is bad, it's best to go with what your hair naturally does. I normally wear my hair straight and smooth, but I actually have a bit of natural wave. Thanks to ColorProof TruCurl system, my waves can be enhanced and frizz-free! Here's the how to:

1) Start with a good foundation. A dime size of ClearItUp shampoo removes product build up and preps the hair to take the TruCurl System better. Follow with a dime size of TruCurl Shampoo, rinse. Finish with a dime size of TruCurl Condition. TruCurl uses seaweed and sugar cane to give weightless moisture and curl memory. The smell reminds me of tropical skittles. Yum!

2) Mix TruCurl Curl Perfecting Creme and CurlyLocks ColorProtect Mouse to make one product. Apply to hair and scrunch to activate curl.

How to Custom Fusion

3) If you're like me, one side of you hair doesn't curl or wave as much as the other side. A quick fix is to scrunch the straighter side, and clip with a butterfly clip as your hair dries. This trains your hair to bend as it dries forming a wave.

Working on that Wave!

4) Top off your style with HumidityRx. This acts as an shield for your hair. Use it right before you leave your house, and take it with you with your umbrella! Use this spray throughout the day to protect your hair from the weather.

5) Once you have the product distributed evenly through your locks, DON'T MESS WITH IT! Let the air dry your hair. If you touch your hair as it's drying, you will create frizz. No one wants that.

Final Look! Natural Beach Waves, Rainy-Day Ready!

Basic Hair Care Habits For More Great Hair Days

Shampooing Tips

I know, you're saying.. "...really? Of course I know how to shampoo my hair." Well, you might not. There are a few common mistakes that can add up to tangles and split ends. When your hair is wet, it is in a weaker state than when it is dry. Extra care needs to be taken while you cleanse!

*Start with wet hair, it is a good idea to rinse as much as possible with just water.
* If you are using a premium shampoo like ColorProof Evolved Color Care, put a dime size in your palm. Rub your hands together to get the lather started. This ensures that you don't waste valuable product and better enables you to cleanse your whole scalp without reaching for more.
*With the lather-activated shampoo in your hands, apply it to scalp and give yourself a good scalp massage. You deserve it.
*When shampooing, focus on the scalp. One thing you want to avoid is balling up your hair from the ends and scrubbing your scalp from there. This creates tangles and snags, which can in turn break your hair.
*After you have sufficiently cleansed your locks, rinse thoroughly. Rinse, rinse, rinse!

Conditioning Tips

*First, choosing the right conditioner for your hair's current state is very important. Your hair stylist can help you find the right one for your needs.
*A common mistake with conditioner is over use. Like shampoo, put a small amount in your palm and rub hands together.
*Start applying your conditioner to the ends of your hair and work your way up to the scalp.
*Follow instructions on the back of the bottle to know how long to let the conditioner set. Then, rinse!

Aerosol Spray Tips

I just recently learned about this one. Hairsprays, shine sprays, texture sprays, dry shampoo sprays... this is for anything that uses a propellant to get the product out of the can.

*Use only short, controlled bursts of spray to use the product. This recharges the can, mixing the appropriate ratio of propellant and product in each spray. It's important to maintain the proper ratio, if you don't... you end up with product left in the can and no way to get it out! That is a bad hair day.

How To: Curl Set

I love a good curl set! I got to play with our wonderful salon coordinators hair one afternoon, so I decided to make its a how-to.

The most important part of curling your hair is the products used. ColorProof is my favorite product line and I use it every single day.

  • First, I shampooed the hair with ColorProof's ClearItUp Detox Shampoo. Then, conditioned with DeepQuench Moisture Masque.
  • Before blowdrying, I applied equal parts CrazySmooth Extreme Shine Treatment Oil and PlushLocks Leave-in Smooth.
  • I proceeded to curl the hair, prepping the hair with AllAround Hairspray, then set the individual curls with small metal clips. Allow to fully cool.
  • After letting the curls down, I combed through them with my fingers and finished with HardCore Hairspray.

The result is beautiful, bouncy curls that last all night!

Look Book Fall/Winter 2014

Blondes: Blondes are icy (think about Frozen's 'Elsa') but still with dimension. Lowlights have been a top request. This salon service adds depth and dimension, making the hair look thicker and fuller.

Brunettes: Brunettes are rich with caramel and gold tones throughout. I love this look. It gives amazing shine and reflection.

Red: Y'all know reds are my favorite! This year, think cinnamon or mahogany tones depending on what better flatters your skin tone

Color is a great way to change up your look. There are a variety of services that can be done to change it up. Dimensional color is the biggest trend this year. I love it because it wears well, in that... as your hair grows... the line of new growth versus color-treated hair is camouflaged for longer!

Never colored your hair? Balayage is a great introductory to color. This is a special highlight technique that gives natural, sun kissed looking highlights to the hair.
